Well Monday's mail arrived and the pass had not come, but we kinda figured we would show up at the zoo with our receipt and we would probably be okay. Well I was a little nervous, not wanting to drive over there and not be able to get in. So I tried calling the zoo, and no one answered. Well I decided to peruse the local news, and saw an article that it was a free zoo day. There are four of them during the year for our county and another one. It was a deal between the zoo and the county since they had a special tax for improvements to the zoo. So off we went.
We pulled in and saw kazillions of people. Eric and I's immediate reactions were to leave and come back another day. But we decided since we had come that we would do it for the kids.
It.was.insane.
We still managed to have a fun time, but there were so many people we could hardly even walk from one exhibit to another. And then to boot, at the end of the day there ended up being a shooting and fights breaking out at the entrance. (Luckily we were at the opposite end of the zoo when that happened, this zoo is HUGE!) But it was definitely not optimal. So between that, crowds of people, and having to park extremely far away it was definitely our first and last free zoo day. (Turns out there were 19,000 people there over the course of the day. Usually there is around 2,000)
Well the zoo pass showed up at the end of the week so March 29th we decided to go on a normal day. It was much, much better. The only downside was Eric and I not paying attention to the time and only getting about 1 1/2 hours there. But we will have plenty of trips there in the next year so it's all good.
