In a letter to James Monroe in
1785, Thomas Jefferson wrote:
My God! How little do my countrymen know
that precious blessings they are in
possession of, and which no other people on
earth enjoy!
Thanks to the bold example of our
founding documents, today the people of many
nations increasingly enjoy many of these blessings.
Meanwhile, too often only our newest countrymen appreciate
"what precious blessings they are in possession of."
In honor of the Declaration, may we resolve
today to study and appreciate the principles of freedom,
its dependence upon virtue, and to invite our neighbors,
family and friends to join us.
...And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.
